About Breitling

Leon Breitling started the now famous watch company in 1884 in Switzerland, with the goal of producing high end, technical watches.

With the development of aviation, Breitling soon began to specialise in this area producing chronometers for flying and becoming a leading pioneer in aviation timekeeping. Their watches have even been worn by astronauts in space and on moon landings.

The timepieces are characterized by their large rugged faces, with complicated dials, and are still a firm favourite amongst pilots to this day, being standard issue to many air force pilots. Their firm association with aviation, together with sponsorship of aviation events, has ensured that Breitling as a brand remains a continued firm favourite at the top end of watches.

Breitling chronograph

While not strictly a model in it’s own right, the term chronograph is used in many different breitling models. The term chronograph by definition means that the watch is both capable of timekeeping and stop watch functions, and is characterized by having one or several small dials within the main dial.

Breitling uses the term chronograph extensively in its model range, including the Evolution, Superocean, Eeromarine, Bentley and others.

Breitling chronospace

The chronospace was originally introduced by Breitling in 1998, and has since been re-launched.

It is characterised by two digital displays (in place of the traditional dials) and was originally aimed at professional pilots. It typically has an oversized number 9 and 3 on the display.
The chronospace model is quartz powered and typically comes with features such as a 1/100th second chronograph, alarm, dual time zone, countdown, 24 hour time, perpetual calendar and a slide rule. Together with the usual choice of coloured dials, there are a selction of wristband types from mesh steel to leather strap.

Breitling aerospace

The breitling aerospace was originally introduced in 1985 and is typically identified by two digital displays in place of the usual circular dials. However, confusingly the word “Navitimer” often appears on the watch face.

The current model features 1/100th Second Chronograph, Backlight ,Countdown Timer, Alarm, additional Timezone, and has a quartz movement which is COSC Certified and extremely accurate.

Breitling superocean heritage

Following it’s domination of aviation, in 1957 Breitling decided to enter the diving market with the Superocean . Designed for the professional diver, armed forces and elite troops, this watch soon gained a strong following in the leisure diving community, thanks to it’s armoured glass giving it a then ground breaking 200 metres depth water resistance. Since then it has been upgraded, with various models offering 500, 100, 1500 and even 2000 metres water resistant capabilities.

The current superocean range is characterized as having a relatively simple face; either just one dial , or date or both.

Breitling Blackbird

The blackbird was intorudced by breitling in 1996, based on the original Navitimer Chronomat, and was aimed at Pilots, being named after the Blackbird SR-71 high altitude reconnaissance aircraft.

Typically, the blackbird has a brushed matt finish on all it’s metal parts, with a blue or black face.

Breitling Montbrillant

The Montbrillant is named after Montbrillant Street in La Chaux-de-Fonds where the original Breitling workshops were located from 1892 to 1979.

Characteristics of the Breitling Montbrillant include date, day and month display and Moon Phase feature.
